All my life I have been a professional cellist and teacher. I have been very privileged to have worked with hundred's of children and adults on their cello playing journey. I also created and was the Artistic Director of www.thesuperstringsclub.co.uk for 20 years.
The teaching still continues in my studio in Wedmore, Somerset. I have taught at Wells Cathedral School and in the faculty of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where I was also an examiner.
I started my cello journey whilst I was a pupil aged 8 at school in Bristol where I shared my first lessons. I encourage my 4/5 year old students to share lessons when they start their journey. The lessons consist of musical games/singing and of course learning the cello! Supportive parents are one of the keys to a childs musical development and my Mum was very supportive throughout my studies as a cellist. She took me to the Dartington Summer Schools annually where masterclasses and concerts were the main events on these courses. I had lessons from Christopher Bunting, Jacqueline Du pre and Amarylis Fleming. Christopher Bunting was hugely influential on my playing and teaching. He was very detailed in his teaching, involving technique with the music and he was very inclusive of all standards of cellists and so part of the day would be spent playing in a cello orchestra, often playing wonderful arrangements that he created himself. Amarylis Fleming suggested that I gain a scholarship to Wells Cathedral School, where she was to become the visiting cello professor for the Specialist Music Scheme. Whilst at Wells I had 3 different teachers, Geoffrey Thomas, Leonard Stein and Raphael Wallfisch. I had many opportunities to play quartets, string orchestra repertoire as well as to practice. The school gave me a fantastic grounding for a career in music. Further studies took me to the RNCM in Manchester. I was invited to take part in masterclasses given at the IMS at Prussia Cove in Cornwall and this led me to study with Johannes Goritsky in Dusseldorf. I won various competitions and eventually ended up in London playing in the Trio Zingara and freelancing with the London Sinfonietta. I have performed numerous recitals with pianists Nigel Clayton and David Price and I have also performed most of the major concertos.
